Winfred is a small town located in Lake County, South Dakota, in the United States. According to the U.S Census Bureau, the population of Winfred was estimated to be 52 people in 2019. The town is situated approximately 23 miles east of Madison, South Dakota, and 75 miles northwest of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Winfred was founded in 1883 and was named after Winfred A. Stanwood, a local businessman. The town initially developed as a center for agricultural trade and transportation. Today, the town remains primarily rural and is home to a few businesses, including a gas station, post office, and tavern.
Winfred is surrounded by farmland and is situated near several recreational areas, including Lake Madison and Lake Herman State Park. The town is also home to a small park that includes a playground, basketball court, and picnic area. Easy access to Interstate 29 makes it easy to travel to nearby cities, such as Sioux Falls, for shopping, dining, and entertainment.
